A deadly industrial disaster in China led the day’s world headlines, after a fireworks factory in Hunan exploded, killing at least 21 people and injuring dozens more, with hundreds of rescuers deployed as authorities warned of further danger from stored black powder and searched for the missing. In Washington, security forces were tested in a very different way, as Secret Service officers shot a gunman near the White House after an exchange of fire that briefly locked down the area around the National Mall. In the Middle East, tensions around Gaza continued to spill outward: an Israeli court extended the detention of two activists seized from a Gaza-bound flotilla, as their lawyers alleged mistreatment and Israeli authorities denied abuse. And in Scotland, Rangers defender Dujon Sterling was fined and banned from driving after admitting drink-driving and careless driving following a crash.
