Violence and political fallout dominated world news today. In southern Lebanon, Israeli forces pushed to Beaufort Castle, their deepest incursion in roughly 26 years, underscoring how fragile the supposed ceasefire with Hezbollah has become as rockets and airstrikes continue across the border. In Myanmar’s Shan State, a devastating blast at a building used to store mining explosives killed at least 45 people and injured dozens more, flattening homes and highlighting the dangers facing civilians in conflict-hit regions. Elsewhere, tensions over state power and accountability were also on display: Newark imposed a curfew around an immigration detention center after a second night of clashes between protesters and police; in Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon said she feels unfairly tarnished by her ex-husband’s embezzlement conviction; and in Nicaragua, the death in custody of Indigenous leader Brooklyn Rivera drew renewed condemnation of the Ortega government’s treatment of dissidents.
