Across continents, questions of justice, borders and accountability dominate the day’s news. In Iran, British couple Craig and Lindsay Foreman have lost their appeal against espionage convictions, leaving them facing 10-year sentences they strongly deny, in a case the UK has condemned as unjustifiable. In Europe, the EU is pressing ahead with a tougher migration overhaul that would speed deportations and potentially allow detention centres outside the bloc, prompting fierce debate over legality and human rights. Tensions over migration have also turned deadly in southern Africa, where Mozambique says five of its citizens were killed in xenophobic attacks in South Africa, triggering repatriation efforts. In the United States, Iowa police are investigating the fatal shooting of six relatives in what authorities believe was a domestic attack ending with the suspect’s suicide. And in sport, Southampton’s “Spygate” scandal deepened as coach Tonda Eckert apologised, even as the club’s owner backed him to remain.
