Diplomatic tempers and grim courtrooms led the world news agenda today. Italy abruptly canceled a planned Washington visit by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani after Donald Trump claimed Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had “begged” for a photo at the G7, a remark Meloni called “completely fabricated” as Rome rallied behind her. In New York, accused killer Luigi Mangione’s lawyers dropped a psychiatric defense in his murder trial, a shift widely seen as aimed at keeping sensitive medical records out of prosecutors’ hands. In England, a three-year-old boy was left critically injured after an incident at a crocodile enclosure, with the zoo owner’s wife reportedly leaping in to save him and police arresting a man on suspicion of attempted murder. Britain also saw long-delayed justice as Janice Nix was jailed over the 1978 scalding-bath death of her stepdaughter, while in New Zealand two people were hurt when a hot air balloon became tangled in trees.
