Nigeria’s Lassa fever outbreak is ongoing, with the national death toll reported by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) at 229 deaths in 2026, according to multiple outlets. NCDC also reports an increase in confirmed infections, including 25 new cases in one week. While outlets differ slightly on the stated death toll figure (224 versus 229), they describe the same overall pattern of rising fatalities alongside recent case notifications.
The reported cases are spread across multiple states. All sources reference Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Edo, and Benue as among the most affected. One report states that these five states together account for about 86% of confirmed infections nationwide. Another notes Ondo contributes the largest share of confirmed cases (30%), followed by Bauchi (25%), Taraba (14%), Edo (10%) and Benue (6%).
NCDC figures cited by outlets also indicate that cases have been recorded across 23 states and in 114 local government areas this year. At least one report additionally mentions infection of a healthcare worker among the newly recorded cases. Health authorities continue to track cases and deaths and issue public health guidance.
