Willie Walsh has officially assumed charge as CEO of IndiGo, the airline’s appointment announced earlier this year. Multiple reports say Walsh brings decades of aviation leadership experience, including starting his career as a pilot at Aer Lingus, later becoming Aer Lingus CEO, leading British Airways, serving as head of International Airlines Group (IAG), and most recently working as Director General of IATA. IndiGo’s managing director Rahul Bhatia welcomes the transition, framing it as the airline enters a new phase as it strengthens its network and prepares for international growth.
In his first address after taking charge, Walsh tells employees that IndiGo should remain “disciplined” and “resilient” while continuing to pursue growth and operational excellence. He says long-term international expansion plans remain on track despite uncertainty in the aviation sector, citing factors such as airspace restrictions, aircraft delivery delays, and broader supply chain disruptions affecting manufacturers and components. Reports also note operational constraints in the region and fleet availability issues related to engines for Airbus A320neo-family aircraft. Walsh indicates IndiGo will keep focusing on safety and reliable service, and he looks ahead to the next phase of growth, including the airline’s plans to add long-haul capacity and widebody aircraft.
