A major international study finds that climate change is reshaping where butterflies live, with many species expanding into new areas while others retreat from traditional habitats. Published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, the research analyses more than 1,700 butterfly species across 105 countries and territories to track changes in geographic range and altitude.

Researchers report that roughly four in five of the documented shifts in butterfly ranges are associated with climate change and extreme weather events. The study also finds that non-climate pressures can influence movements, including changes in land use, intensive agriculture, urbanisation, habitat fragmentation, and the introduction of invasive species.

The results show that most observed range changes involve expansion, though some species contract their range. Altitudinal shifts are also present but are less common than geographic range changes. Authors note that butterflies are often used as indicators of ecosystem health because they are sensitive to temperature and rely on specific host plants.

Experts caution that apparent expansions may be easier to detect than disappearances from former habitats. They also warn that species may face limits on how far they can move—such as reaching natural barriers—raising the risk of rapid declines and local extinctions. The authors call for stronger habitat protection, ecological connectivity, and better monitoring.
