Google is retiring Google Assistant on Android phones and Wear OS devices starting September 4, replacing it with Gemini as the primary voice and AI assistant. Multiple outlets report that Google sets the shutdown date and tells users that Assistant will not be available afterward.
The coverage also says the change rolls out over time: at least one report notes the shutdown may take several weeks to reach all users, meaning some people may see a brief delay. Ars Technica and other outlets characterize the move as removing voice control from Assistant and leaving Gemini as the remaining option.
Outlets differ mainly on emphasis and timelines. The Times of India and 9to5Google stress the “end of an era” framing and note that Gemini will take over broadly. The Next Web adds that emails to users confirm the shift and that the original Assistant retirement plan was later than the current date. Several sources agree that Assistant remains in some connected contexts—such as smart home devices and vehicles with Google built-in—at least for now, while Android Auto–linked devices are included in the September 4 shutdown scope.
