Researchers report they have created the first viruses designed by artificial intelligence that function as complete genomes. The work, published in Science, uses generative genome language models developed by a Stanford team and the Arc Institute to write DNA for bacteriophages—viruses that infect bacteria and are not designed to target humans. In laboratory experiments, the researchers synthesized AI-designed phage genomes and tested them against E. coli. They report that 16 of the AI-designed bacteriophages were viable and could replicate and kill E. coli, including strains resistant to naturally occurring bacteriophages. Some AI-designed phages also showed faster multiplication than the natural Phi X-174 phage used as a reference.
Independent experts cited by multiple outlets say the study is a proof of concept for whole-genome generative design and could support phage therapy and other biotechnology tools, potentially offering alternatives to antibiotics as resistance rises. At the same time, they warn that the capability to compose functional viral genomes using generative AI raises unresolved biosafety and biosecurity questions. Several sources highlight that governance is not yet in place to steer the technology safely and that a layered approach, including controls around DNA synthesis, access, and lab review and screening, may be needed.
