Authorities in eastern China suspend classes and close tourist sites as Typhoon Dolphin moves toward the coast, with heavy rain expected and risks of flooding and landslides.
Forecasters estimate the storm’s maximum sustained winds at about 162 km/h (101 mph). The typhoon is expected to affect Zhejiang province and northern parts of neighboring Fujian late Sunday, with Shanghai also in its path. Predicted rainfall totals are in the range of 200–400 mm over the coming days. In Zhejiang, many tourist destinations are closed Saturday and Sunday, along with water-based activities such as ferries and cruises.
In Ningbo, one of Zhejiang’s largest cities, officials order schools and other educational facilities shut for the weekend and halt all water-related activities. National authorities activate a level III emergency response, described as the second lowest tier, as about 800 ships remain docked at the port.
