Taylor Farms recalls jalapeño products after possible salmonella contamination concerns

The recall affects prepared foods distributed across 26 states, and at least 345 cases and 36 hospitalizations have been reported. Consumers are advised to check their fridges and discard any recalled products immediately. An ongoing food safety investigation into the potential source of a Salmonella javiana outbreak across the United States has implicated a produce supplier for the second time in recent weeks. Taylor Farms has recalled prepared foods containing jalapeños from major retailers in several states, including Walmart, Whole Foods, and Target.  The affected products include popular refrigerated foods like salsa, guacamole, dips, burritos, and sandwiches. This comes after Taylor Farms was previously linked to the ongoing cyclospora outbreak that has sickened thousands, in which the supplier recalled iceberg lettuce sold at fast-food restaurant chains like Taco Bell.  Now, the Salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeños sourced from Coast Citrus Distributors and supplied by Taylor Farms has consumers on edge. Fast-casual restaurant chains like Chipotle and Qdoba, which had previously carried the peppers in several locations, recently pulled them from their restaurants nationwide out of an abundance of caution. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Taylor Fresh Foods, the manufacturer of Taylor Farms products, is no longer sourcing jalapeños from Coast Citrus Distributors and will be relying on alternative suppliers.  As of August 10, the Salmonella outbreak sickened 345 people and hospitalized 36 across 27 states, according to the FDA. No deaths have been reported. Jalapeños linked to Salmonella distributed in 26 states  The FDA has been investigating the Salmonella outbreak since late July.   Federal regulators traced the source of the outbreak to fresh jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico, which were distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors, prompting a recall, followed by recalls of products made with the peppers.  On August 8, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert covering certain meat and poultry products containing the recalled jalapeños. Taylor Fresh Foods issued a recall on August 9 after the contaminated peppers entered the supply chain. The recalled Taylor products were distributed to retail centers in 26 states: Alabama Arkansas Florida Georgia Illinois Indiana Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Massachusetts Maine Michigan Minnesota Missouri Mississippi Nebraska New Hampshire New York Ohio Oklahoma South Carolina Tennessee Texas Vermont Wisconsin West Virginia Stores that received the affected products include Hannaford, Kroger, Stop & Shop, Target, Trader Joe’s, Walmart and Whole Foods. According to the FDA, the recalled products have “Best If Used By” dates up to and including August 16, 2026.  “Consumers should take this recall seriously, but there is no reason to avoid every Taylor Farms product,” said Robert Glatter, MD, attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York and assistant professor of emergency medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. “The concern is limited to the specific jalapeño-containing products and date or lot codes listed in the recall,” Glatter told Healthline. Which products containing jalapeños are affected? The recall includes salsa and guacamole products, pico de gallo, dips, burritos, sandwiches, and other prepared foods that contain the recalled jalapeños.  Taylor Farms has included product-specific information, such as UPCs and dates, on its recall page. Taylor Farms couldn’t immediately be reached for comment. Concerned consumers should closely check the packaging of products they suspect may be linked to the outbreak.  If a product matches the recalled UPC and date information, you should throw it away or return it to the retailer for a refund. After handling a recalled product, wash your hands thoroughly.  Clean and sanitize refrigerator surfaces, countertops, cutting boards, utensils, and containers that may have come into contact with the contaminated food. The FDA recommends washing surfaces first and then sanitizing them to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Glatter recommended keeping recalled food away from other foods. The FDA also advises keeping refrigerators at or below 40°F and refrigerating perishable foods promptly, following the 2-hour rule, or 1 hour when outside temperatures exceed 90°F. It is not advised to rely on appearance, smell, or taste to determine whether a product is safe, since food contaminated with Salmonella can look and smell normal. “Do not eat, taste, rinse, or try to remove the jalapeños from a recalled product,” Glatter said. What are the symptoms of Salmonella? Salmonella infection may cause various symptoms, including: diarrhea fever abdominal cramps nausea and vomiting Symptoms usually develop within hours or, at times, several days after exposure and may last 4–7 days.  Most people recover from Salmonella infection without treatment, but some illnesses may require hospitalization. Young children, adults 65 and older, and immunocompromised individuals are at greater risk for severe illness. If you’re experiencing severe or persistent symptoms, you should contact a healthcare professional. “It’s important to seek medical advice for bloody diarrhea, fever above 102°F, dehydration, worsening abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down,” Glatter said.

Just weeks after the company recalled lettuce and other produce suspected of being tainted by the cyclosporiasis parasite, it recalled jalapeños linked to a salmonella outbreak.

Taylor Farms voluntarily recalled ready-to-use food products in multiple grocery stores containing potentially contaminated jalapeños linked to a salmonella outbreak.

The voluntary recall comes after U.S. health officials said businesses should check their inventory for the recalled jalapeno peppers and not sell or serve them.

Taylor Farms, which is based out of California, is one of the largest producers of fresh-cut vegetables and salads in North America.. It is a major supplier to a number of major supermarket chains as well as restaurant operators.

Guacamole, pico de gallo and taco dip are some of the prepared foods included in the recall. The announcement comes a few weeks after Taylor Farms voluntarily recalled its iceberg lettuce products sourced from central Mexico because of a potential link to a multistate cyclospora outbreak.
