Google is adding a competing third-party digital store to the US Google Play experience for the first time. After recent court-related changes tied to its dispute with Epic Games, users in the US can open the Play Store and download Aptoide, a mobile games-focused store, directly from Google’s storefront.
All outlets link the move to a judge’s order and subsequent program changes that require Play to open up to rival app stores. Previously, third-party stores on Android were generally available only if they were pre-installed on certain devices (such as manufacturer storefronts) or if users installed them through sideloading. Making rival stores appear within the Play interface makes them easier for users to discover and install, according to multiple reports.
