French news publishers file a complaint with France’s competition authority over Google’s AI-generated summaries in search results. The General Information Press Alliance (Apig) asks the regulator to require Google to honour commitments made in 2022 with French news groups.
The publishers argue that “AI Overviews” and “AI Mode” reduce traffic to the original articles, lowering readers’ incentive to visit newspaper and magazine websites. Multiple outlets report the complaint is supported by a large coalition—nearly 300 French newspapers and magazines—submitted by the publishers’ trade association. The complaint also frames the issue as a potential competition and compensation dispute linked to the 2022 deal.
Some coverage highlights the publishers’ request for the watchdog to “rein in” Google’s use of the technology and, in one account, to effectively put a price on the benefit gained from AI answers that rely on underlying journalism. Google, meanwhile, disputes the criticism, saying the summaries help users ask more complex questions and discover new content. The differing emphases reflect whether the case is framed primarily as traffic loss, enforcement of existing commitments, or broader competition concerns.
