Meta says it has shut down access to about 756,000 social media accounts in Australia that it believes are held by people under 16. The accounts are on both Instagram and Facebook, and the company says it acted after beginning compliance with Australia’s youth social media ban that moves from being threatened to being enforced.
Meta’s figures include removals before the ban fully took effect in December, as well as subsequent deactivations. Bloomberg, RTE, Japan Today, and Business Line all cite roughly the same total number and describe it as spanning Instagram and Facebook accounts. The Next Web adds additional detail on how the total breaks down by platform—462,000 on Instagram and 294,000 on Facebook—and places the removals within a December-to-June window. Across outlets, Meta also signals it will take more steps in response to possible regulatory intervention.
