Trump dismisses USS Abraham Lincoln conditions complaints as families and lawmakers demand answers

Families and lawmakers are demanding answers over reported shortages and mental health concerns aboard the carrier

President Trump said the USS Abraham Lincoln deployment is "not nearly long enough." A family member of a sailor on board that ship said those comments are shameful.

US President Donald Trump that the over-260-day deployment was “not nearly long enough” when asked by reporters if he believed the deployment had gone on too long.

President Donald Trump dismissed concerns from families of service members about the conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. When asked by NBC News whether the deployments have gone on for too long, Trump replied “not nearly long enough.” NBC News’ Monica Alba reports. 

Lawmakers are pressing for answers amid reports that sailors aboard the San Diego-based carrier have endured food shortages, plumbing failures and severe fatigue.

Trump said USS Lincoln family members are not concerned about conditions.

US President Donald Trump on Friday dismissed concerns about the toll on sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, who have endured a record deployment of almost nine months, saying that the deployment had been “not nearly long enough”. The Lincoln has been supporting the US war against Iran, and reports have emerged of sailors struggling with mental health issues.

Asked whether the deployment of the Abraham Lincoln had gone on too long, the president said its deployment had lasted “not nearly long enough.”

Trump refuted that family members have raised concerns about the deployment's length and even said that the more than 260-day deployment is "not nearly long enough."

President Donald Trump on Friday dismissed concerns from families of service members about the grim conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, whose deployment had been overextended in the Middle East due to the Iran war.

President Donald Trump denied reports Friday of horrific conditions onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln—and suggested that the U.S. servicemembers should stay at sea for even longer.  Trump offered a shockingly callous response while taking a question about the aircraft carrier that’s been deployed since November. “Family members of U.S. servicemembers are concerned about conditions onboard the USS Lincoln—” one reporter said. “Well no—that ship is moving—no, they’re not,” Trump interjected. “That ship is moving right now, or very shortly, and it’s being replaced with another very similar ship.”Asked whether he believed that the servicemembers had been deployed for “too long,” Trump had a similarly heartless reply.“No, no, no. These issues have placed an immense strain on the mental health and wellbeing of sailors on board the ship. It’s gotten so bad that multiple sailors have tried to jump overboard. The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the USS George Washington aircraft carrier will soon be deployed to the Persian Gulf from Japan to replace the Abraham Lincoln, part of a previously scheduled rotation plan. But the Lincoln has already been deployed for 250 days and gone a record 200 days without a port call.Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth previously claimed that reports about the state of affairs aboard the Lincoln had “misrepresented” the situation. Clearly, the president couldn’t care less about U.S. servicemembers or their families.
