Nvidia is revising its planned financial guarantee for a proposed OpenAI data centre project in Ohio, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. The expected guarantee is initially less than $120 billion, down from about $250 billion previously discussed.

The Journal reports that Nvidia and OpenAI are nearing an agreement under which the chipmaker would act as a financial backstop only for the first phase of the project. The outlet adds that a deal could be signed as early as this weekend, while OpenAI is still considering a binding lease for the broader 10-gigawatt plan. The site is being developed by SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank.

Outlet coverage also points to the reason for the change: investor concern about Nvidia’s risk exposure from very large financing commitments. In the lead-up to these talks, Nvidia partnered with six major financial institutions to launch compute-financing platforms aimed at raising more than $500 billion in third-party capital for AI infrastructure, which frames the shift toward external funding support.
