The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) says it has busted an alleged areca nut import network in India, with authorities citing potential customs duty losses of more than ₹2,500 crore. The Finance Ministry says nine people have been arrested so far. During the investigation, DRI officers carried out searches and seized cash and areca nuts.

Officials allege that areca nuts sourced from countries in South-East Asia, including Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, were falsely declared as originating from Bangladesh to claim customs duty exemptions under the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA). Areca nuts generally attract a 100% basic customs duty, while imports meeting SAFTA rules of origin for Bangladesh are eligible for full duty exemption. Authorities say they found documents and evidence suggesting the actual origin of the goods.

Different outlets emphasize similar operational details and the revenue-loss figure, with NDTV and Free Press Journal both highlighting seizures of about ₹75 lakh in cash and around 160 metric tonnes of areca nuts, along with the nine arrests. The outlets also report that the customs broker connected to the case has been suspended, and that further investigation is underway.
