Phyllida Law, the cherished veteran actress and beloved mother of Emma Thompson, has sadly passed away at the age of ninety-four. She left this world peacefully at her home, surrounded by her devoted family. Law enjoyed a prolific career that spanned theatre, television, and film, sharing the screen with her daughters in memorable productions such as 'Peter's Friends' and 'Much Ado About Nothing'.

Phyllida Law, a veteran stage and screen actress whose credits include roles opposite her daughters Emma Thompson and Sophie Thompson, has died.

Born in 1932 in Glasgow, Phyllida Law began her acting career in the 1950s and most recently starred in Then Came You in 2020.

Her manager Jacky Leggo shared that she ‘died supremely peacefully at home, surrounded by all her family’. The Glasgow-born actress rose to prominence in the 1960s in shows like Dr Finlay’s Casebook and Dixon of Dock Green, landing high-profile roles in the 80s. Law starred opposite Emma multiple times such as in Peter’s Friends and Shakespeare adaptation Much Ado About Nothing. Fans of the 1996 film version of Jane Austen’s Emma, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, will recognise her as Mrs. Bates, alongside her other daughter Sophie. The Winter Guest actress studied at the renowned Old Vic Theatre school, initially hoping to go into stage design but discovering a love for acting too. Also an actor Thompson was best known for TV series The Magic Roundabout, which he adapted from the original French and narrated for the BBC. His voice became incredibly well known and he cameoed in shows such as Doctor Who and Coronation Street in the late 60s. The couple had two children – Emma and Sophie – but Thompson sadly died in 1982 at the age of 53 following a heart attack. Law’s acting career spans over 60 years, with her final role coming in 2020 with American rom-com Then Came You, playing Arlene.
