Joseph Gibson, 35, is accused of running a romance scam on Tinder in which he tells victims he has cancer and needs money for treatment. According to reporting, he uses the claim of illness to build sympathy and persuade people to send him funds, leading to losses ranging across cases described by different outlets.
The outlets differ in the emphasis of his broader persona and the scale presented for victims’ total losses. One report says the conman also portrays himself as wealthy, including details designed to impress targets, and references victims being swindled out of around £80,000 in total. Another focuses on how he also claims he has served as a soldier and presents an exaggerated picture of status, including statements about owning luxury assets and being extremely wealthy, citing that victims are left with dramatically small remaining sums. Both accounts describe a pattern of deception involving medical and military-related lies.
