Australia bans songs that are fully generated using artificial intelligence from appearing on its official music charts. The decision follows public controversy over a viral remix and cover that used AI-generated vocals and instrumentation, which had drawn widespread attention and radio play.
Multiple outlets report that the dispute centres on a variation of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.” One producer, Josh Fawaz, previously created the track using AI-generated vocals and drums, after which it was played heavily on radio and remained in the charts for an extended period. The ban is introduced weeks after a DJ acknowledged using AI to remix a Madonna song that had reached the top of the Australian charts.
While the ban targets fully AI-generated tracks, outlets say the rules allow some use of AI in a limited capacity. Al Jazeera reports that songs using AI as a “supporting role” can still be eligible for chart inclusion.
