Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) fines TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, 153.7 million reais (about US$29.9 million) over what it describes as irregularities in how TikTok processes personal data belonging to children and adolescents.
In its decision, the ANPD also orders ByteDance to delete data that was collected in violation of the agency’s rules. The regulator says ByteDance must implement a compliance plan aimed at improving protection for minors.
The outlets agree on the fine amount, the regulator involved, and the focus on children’s data management. They frame the action as part of broader enforcement and heightened scrutiny of how online platforms safeguard minors’ personal information, with one outlet also noting separate ANPD steps involving Discord earlier this month.
