SpaceX has unveiled plans to build its largest rocket launch complex yet in southern Louisiana, a project estimated at $100 billion. The company says the development is intended to expand its Starship launch operations and support large-scale mission activity tied to its broader commercial goals.
Multiple outlets report that the site, called “Starbase Louisiana,” would be located on Pecan Island in coastal wetlands. Several sources describe the plan as transforming coastal marshland into a major launch and manufacturing hub, with the scale of the area repeatedly cited as about 125,000 acres (roughly 50,585 hectares). SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell is quoted in some coverage saying the complex could eventually enable thousands of Starship launches per year.
Reporting also highlights the project’s link to SpaceX’s ambitions for launching AI-related satellites. While most outlets focus on the overall cost, size, and potential launch cadence, some coverage frames the proposal as broader infrastructure for production and launches, rather than solely a launch site, and notes it would extend operations beyond existing Starship efforts in South Texas and planned facilities in Florida.
