The World Health Organization (WHO) says the Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo shows “encouraging signs,” while warning that the epidemic is still spreading and not yet under control. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tells reporters the response is beginning to “gain ground.”
At the same time, WHO stresses that progress is uneven. Outlets reporting from a WHO briefing note that cases in at least one eastern region are surging, even as overall signs of improvement emerge. France 24 adds that the outbreak is “far from over,” citing the scale of reported transmission, including more than 7,000 cases across seven provinces as of September 11.
