OpenAI announces “Dots,” a new set of always-on AI agents that users can assign tasks to and keep running in the background across connected apps. The company introduces the agents during its DevDay keynote, describing them as helpers that can handle multistep work rather than only responding to one-off prompts.
Several outlets frame Dots as OpenAI’s response to Meta’s recently publicized Muse avatar agent. Wired and The Verge describe Dots as being able to connect to apps and learn user preferences over time. Business Insider and 9to5Google also characterize Dots as a competitive entry in the “personal AI” and agentic-assistant space. Reporting differs mainly in emphasis: The Verge highlights “nearly anything” capabilities and learning behavior, while Adweek points to the breadth of app connectivity and that the agents operate on their own cloud computers.
All sources agree that Dots are powered by OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra model and are designed to execute tasks across a large app ecosystem.
