The Green Party’s annual conference in Brighton is debating a motion that would declare “Zionism is a form of racism.” Green members are expected to vote on Sunday, and if it passes it would become official party policy. The proposal is presented as addressing the ideology and its alleged harms, alongside a call for a single democratic Palestinian state with equal rights for different groups.

The motion’s authors and backers argue it is aimed at Zionism as a political ideology and practice rather than at Jewish people as an ethnicity or religion. Holocaust survivor and activist Stephen Kapos endorses it. Green Party leader Zack Polanski, who is Jewish, says the motion should be amended to make explicit safeguards for Jewish members, including those associated with Zionist synagogues, and he also questions aspects of a “single state” framing.

Other Green Party figures criticize the proposal as potentially divisive, citing concerns that Zionism lacks a single definition and that the policy could be seen as excluding Jewish people or failing to support the right of both Israelis and Palestinians to statehood. Ahead of the vote, pro-Israel demonstrators protest outside the conference, while counter-protesters support the motion. The event reflects broader controversy intensified by the Israel-Gaza war and domestic debates over antisemitism and antiracism.
