The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed a steep increase in the entertainment tax it charges on cinema “shows,” which exhibitors say could lead to higher movie ticket prices in Mumbai. NDTV and the other outlets report that the proposal includes raising the levy for air-conditioned cinemas and multiplexes from Rs 60 to Rs 400 per show.

All outlets note that the tax is calculated per show rather than per ticket, which affects how much money remains available for revenue sharing between exhibitors and distributors. Exhibitors and producers estimate the change could be passed on to consumers, potentially increasing average ticket prices by about Rs 5–10. They also highlight that theatre occupancy can influence the effective cost burden for exhibitors, with lower occupancy potentially increasing pressure on ticket pricing.

However, the proposal has not yet taken effect. Multiple reports say BMC is awaiting approvals from the state government’s Urban Development Department and relevant BMC processes, including further committee and civic house discussions. The BMC’s revised rates would come into force only after required sanctions and notification through the official gazette. One report also describes additional proposed rates for single-screen AC, non-AC cinemas, and other entertainment programmes.
