Polling begins across multiple constituencies in India for by-elections, including West Bengal’s Nandigram and Rejinagar assembly seats, Tamil Nadu’s Madurantakam and Dharapuram assembly seats, Puducherry’s Thattanchavady assembly seat, and Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency. Voting starts in the morning and takes place amid multi-party contests in several states.
In West Bengal, the contests are held following vacancies after previous electoral outcomes: Nandigram’s seat fell vacant after Suvendu Adhikari chooses to retain a different constituency, while Rejinagar becomes vacant after Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir resigns. In Assam, the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election features a triangular contest among BJP, Congress and AIUDF. In Puducherry, the Thattanchavady assembly race runs as a three-way contest.
In Tamil Nadu, both assembly by-elections draw crowded fields and separate campaigning angles across outlets. Madurantakam and Dharapuram seats fall vacant after resignations linked to former MLAs who moved between parties. Outlets also highlight that TVK is challenged by multiple parties, with CPI and CPM backing the TVK government but contesting separately in these by-polls. Counting is scheduled for October 9, with the overall process set to conclude before October 11.
