Common Sense Media says OpenAI’s “ChatGPT for Teens,” introduced in August as the default mode for users aged 13 to 17, is not safe for children. In a risk assessment, the nonprofit gives the product its lowest rating—“Unacceptable Risk”—arguing that the safeguards are insufficient for protecting minors.
The report says the teen-focused guardrails fail in key areas, including parental alerts and crisis-related handling during sensitive conversations, as well as age and safety checks. Outlets also report the nonprofit contends the platform should not be promoted or made available to under-18s.
OpenAI disputes the findings, according to coverage that notes disagreements over how effective the teen mode protections are. The differing outlets largely center on the same core conclusions from Common Sense Media, while reflecting the company’s response and the broader debate about how well generative AI can be managed for younger users.
