India is developing a draft steel policy that targets expanding production capacity to 604 million metric tons by 2047, up from about 220 million tons currently. The government says the plan is intended to meet expected demand from infrastructure and manufacturing while aligning the sector with India’s broader climate goals.

Across outlets, the draft policy also focuses on lowering the steel industry’s emissions per unit of output and improving access to key raw materials. Reuters-cited reporting describes an average carbon-emission intensity reduction to about 1.54 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of crude steel by 2047, from around 2.54 tonnes today. The policy highlights securing iron ore and coking coal through overseas investments, joint ventures, and foreign assets, alongside efforts to diversify sourcing to reduce supply risk. The draft is presented for public consultation, and the government is expected to discuss measures linked to iron ore and coking coal demand projections.
