IIT Bombay has opened recruitment for ad hoc counsellors for its Student Wellness Centre, aiming to strengthen mental health support for students. The institute plans to hire 30 counsellors in total—26 student counsellors and four senior counsellors—after recent student deaths and campus protests that have raised scrutiny of student wellbeing and support systems.

Applications are invited online, with a deadline reported as October 17. Interviews are scheduled between October 12 and October 18, and selected candidates are expected to begin appointments starting around October 15, with some sources noting the possibility of start dates extending through November 17. Around 10 recruits may be offered campus accommodation, depending on availability.

Across reports, the counsellors are expected to work with undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students, provide counselling for emotional distress and mental health concerns, help identify students who may need further assistance, and refer them to additional support or treatment when required. Reports also describe that full-time roles involve 40 hours per week and part-time roles 20 hours per week, with an initial appointment period of 89 days and potential extension based on performance. Separate from recruitment, IIT Bombay forms a committee to review academic procedures and related processes following the incidents.
