Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) says it is exploring potential investments in Texas to expand chip production in the United States. The company also confirms it is in discussions with Elon Musk’s proposed “Terafab” chip-manufacturing project in Texas, according to comments from its chairman and CEO, C.C. Wei.
Across the outlets, TSMC’s position is consistent: while it is open to collaborating on Terafab, any factory involved must be run by TSMC. Wei says TSMC must retain operational control over its plants, framing the collaboration as contingent on how the manufacturing site would be managed. Bloomberg and The Next Web report that talks have not yet produced an agreement.
In addition to the Terafab discussions, at least one report notes that TSMC sends teams to Texas to assess other expansion opportunities beyond its existing U.S. hub, suggesting the Texas effort is broader than any single partnership.
Overall, the reporting centers on potential U.S. capacity expansion, with the main point of difference being the emphasis on Texas investment scope versus the specific terms of collaboration with Musk’s project.
