Nigeria’s Presidency rejects Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s allegation that the Federal Government is withholding ₦250 billion in Nigeria LNG (NLNG) dividends for each state until after the 2027 elections. Makinde had said the dividends were paid into the Federation Account, that the figures were reconciled, and that the Federal Government spent the money instead of distributing it to states. He also argued that any delay linked to elections should not override citizens’ welfare.
In response, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, says Makinde’s claim is false. The Presidency argues that the stated per-state figure is inconsistent with how NLNG dividends historically flow into the Federation Account and with the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) sharing formula. It says that for a single payout of ₦250 billion to each of the 36 states to total about ₦9 trillion, NLNG dividends would have to exceed the company’s lifetime pattern of dividend declarations to the Federation.
Across the reports, the central dispute remains whether a large, per-state NLNG dividend payment is being held back or whether Makinde’s figure is misleading. The Presidency urges Nigerians to disregard the claim, while Makinde maintains the funds were not properly shared with states.
