Indian Railways extends its Optional Travel Insurance Scheme (OTIS) to passengers buying reserved tickets at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters from October 27. The insurance option, previously available to eligible online ticket buyers via IRCTC, will now be offered at railway reservation counters.
Across outlets, the scheme is described as optional and priced at 45 paise per passenger for coverage up to ₹10 lakh. Reports say the Railway Board has directed zonal railways to make arrangements for the rollout after a Supreme Court order dated October 6 in the Union of India versus Radha Yadav case. Compensation details are broadly the same: up to ₹10 lakh for death or permanent total disability due to railway accidents or untoward incidents, with additional provisions for permanent partial disability, hospitalisation, and transportation of mortal remains.
Outlets also highlight that passengers choosing the insurance must provide a mobile number and pay the premium digitally, with details sent to the registered number. Reservation staff are instructed to inform passengers about the voluntary add-on and ensure required consent and documentation are recorded.
