MTN Nigeria says subscribers’ data bundles often run out quickly because of how people use smartphones and mobile apps, particularly high-resolution video streaming and features that download or play content automatically. The company says data is not taken “without action,” pointing to user or device activity such as background apps and auto-downloads.

MTN highlights that video apps like TikTok, YouTube and Instagram can consume widely different amounts of data depending on resolution and playback behaviour. It also cites WhatsApp as an example where text uses little data but status updates, videos, group chats and automatic media downloads can drain bundles faster. The company advises customers to adjust settings, turn off automatic downloads, enable data-saving options and monitor usage through the MyMTN app.

While outlets largely align on MTN’s explanation and the emphasis on streaming and device behaviour, coverage differs slightly in framing. Nigerian Eye specifically reports MTN’s denial of theft claims at a “Data on Trial” forum and adds a year-on-year consumption figure, while other outlets focus more narrowly on the practical settings advice and causes of depletion.
