Anthropic has told California Governor Gavin Newsom that the state should be able to ask courts to block AI models that pose serious risks. The company’s position is set out in a letter dated 15 October, which a number of outlets say was first reported by Politico.

The letter is presented as a response to an executive order Newsom signed in September. Outlets frame Anthropic’s request in terms of giving the state a judicial mechanism to act when AI systems are considered high risk, rather than relying only on administrative measures.

While coverage agrees on the core claim—courts should be able to block risky models and the letter responds to Newsom’s September order—outlets differ in how much surrounding detail they include and in how directly they connect the proposal to the governor’s executive order.
