Cryptocurrency exchange Binance says it is investigating reports of a potential security issue after very large transfers from its platform triggered trader concern. Multiple outlets describe the situation as a suspected hack or “drain,” citing high-value outflows from Binance wallets and on-chain activity.
In response to the reports, Tether and Circle freeze substantial amounts of stablecoins tied to the affected funds. NBC News, for example, reports freezes of more than $1.5 billion, while other outlets put the total frozen closer to around $1.8–$2.4 billion. Binance also repeatedly states that user funds are safe, with some coverage noting Binance’s wording that it is actively investigating, and others emphasizing the size of transfers that drew attention.
Outlets differ mainly in the figures they spotlight and how they frame the event. Some focus on market impact and the magnitude of the alleged drain, while others lead with the stablecoin freezes. Independent crypto outlets also reference third-party or on-chain tallies, which are not consistent across reports, but the core elements—Binance’s investigation and the freezes by Tether and Circle—are common across coverage.
