South Korea beat Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 in the first of two pre-World Cup friendlies during their U.S. training camp in Provo, Utah, at BYU South Field. The match began with Korea controlling the game, but they generate few chances in the opening half-hour. Captain Son Heung-min scored twice in the first half to give South Korea an early lead. In the second half, striker Cho Gue-sung added two more goals. Hwang Hee-chan also scored, converting a penalty. The result came against Trinidad and Tobago, ranked No. 102, while South Korea entered as world No. 25.
Head coach Hong Myung-bo said he was satisfied with both the “process” and the outcome, citing positives such as Son’s brace and the return of midfielder Hwang In-beom from an ankle injury. Korea’s next friendly was against El Salvador, also in Provo, ahead of their World Cup Group A opener against Czechia in Guadalajara. Korea has been training in Utah since mid-May, including time intended to help players adapt to high-altitude conditions similar to Guadalajara, where two of its three group matches are scheduled.
