Chicago is finalizing a deal to hire Tiago Splitter as its next head coach, according to multiple reports. The Athletic, CBS Sports, and Yahoo Sports, citing sources, say Splitter leaves the Portland Trail Blazers after serving as interim head coach following the suspension of Portland coach Chauncey Billups. Reports also describe Splitter as joining Billups’ staff in Portland in June. While interim, Splitter leads the Trail Blazers into the playoffs and is credited with work on player development. Yahoo Sports reports he posts a 42–39 record as interim coach during the season. The Athletic similarly cites a 42–39 mark and notes that the interim stretch begins after Billups is arrested in October for alleged involvement in an illegal gambling scheme, after which the NBA places him on leave and Splitter is elevated. The Oregonian adds that Portland’s head-coach position remains open at least as of Monday morning. The Bulls’ hiring is reported by outlets including Yahoo Sports and CBS Sports, with The Associated Press cited by Yahoo Sports as saying the Bulls are finalizing the decision with Splitter.
