Former Manchester United and Wales striker Mark Hughes says he and his family are “totally heartbroken” after the sudden and unexpected death of his son, Alex Hughes, aged 38. Multiple outlets report that Alex Hughes worked in football recruitment and was player recruitment lead at Grimsby Town, a role he took up in 2025. Before that, he held similar positions and scouting-related work at clubs including Manchester City, Fulham, Blackburn Rovers and German club 1860 Munich. Several sources add that Alex had also worked with his father, Mark, including during his spells at Blackburn, Manchester City and Fulham.
Hughes’ comments are attributed to a statement he released via the League Managers Association, in which he asks for privacy as the family comes to terms with their loss. The statement also describes Alex’s family, including his wife Jessica, and his children, Sebastian and Leonardo, as well as his siblings, Curtis and Xenna. The LMA sends condolences to Alex’s family and friends. Tributes reportedly come from across football after the news.
