A couple is arrested in Manhattan after an apparent marriage proposal staged atop the Empire State Building’s spire. Multiple outlets report that two people climbed into restricted upper areas above where the public is permitted, wearing black clothing and appearing masked as they reached the top. At the pinnacle, they unfurled a black banner with the message: “When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.” Several reports describe the man proposing to the woman during or shortly after the banner display.

Police and emergency responders respond after the stunt, and the pair are taken into custody after they descend. Reporting across outlets says no injuries are reported, though the incident prompts a security and rescue response that includes officers reaching the area near the antenna. The accounts also note that authorities investigate how the climbers accessed restricted levels and whether they had planned the route.

The couple is identified by some reports as Russian daredevils Angela Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov, and at least one outlet says they face felony charges including burglary and reckless endangerment, after which they are released under court supervision pending proceedings.
