A 19-year-old man, Kian Bateman, is sentenced to prison after driving into and killing Shelley Davies, a 38-year-old mother of three, following his use of laughing gas. According to reports, Bateman was under the influence of nitrous oxide at the time of the crash. He drove a car into Davies and her partner, David Bratcher, injuring Bratcher as well. Davies later dies in hospital about three weeks after the collision.
All accounts describe the incident as involving Bateman intentionally using a vehicle to strike Davies and her partner. The reports also state that Bratcher survives the attack but is injured. One outlet notes that Davies had work connected with supporting people with addiction, and that her background is part of why her death has drawn attention.
While the outlets differ in emphasis, they broadly agree on the identity of those involved, the role attributed to nitrous oxide, and that Bateman receives a life sentence for his part in Davies’s death and the injuries caused to Bratcher.
