Nigerian medical graduate Nnani Adaobi Marian, 23, dies from injuries sustained in a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine, her university and Nigerian media report. The airstrike reportedly occurred on June 29 in the Kholodnohirskyi district, where multiple aerial bombs were said to have struck and caused civilian casualties and injuries. Marian, a final-year student at Kharkiv National Medical University, suffered severe burns and other critical injuries. Sources say doctors first attempted to treat her in Kharkiv, and she was later taken to Germany for further care, where she died. Reports in Nigeria cite that she had about 90% burns and that efforts by medical teams were unsuccessful.
Several outlets also report that Marian was travelling with her friend, Fatima Huseynova, for a graduation photoshoot at the time of the strike; Huseynova is reported to have been killed in the attack while Marian was critically injured. The Nigerian government issues a reaction to her death, and her university describes her academic performance and background, noting she was set to receive her medical degree days after the strike.
