Security dominated the political agenda today, from South Asia to the Gulf and the Pacific. Myanmar’s new president, Min Aung Hlaing, opened a closely watched India visit with a symbolic stop in Bodh Gaya before talks in Delhi expected to focus on trade, border security and defence ties. In Singapore, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth pressed Asian allies to shoulder more of the regional burden while signaling a steadier, if still wary, approach to China and a sharper impatience with Europe. That Indo-Pacific focus was reinforced by a new AUKUS project to develop underwater drones aimed at protecting undersea infrastructure and strengthening naval reach. Meanwhile, tensions in the Middle East remained acute after an Iranian missile strike on a U.S. base in Kuwait injured several Americans and damaged MQ-9 drones. In U.S. domestic politics, Maine Democrat Graham Platner faced fresh scrutiny over reports his wife warned campaign staff about explicit messages he sent to other women.
