United States President Donald Trump publicly thanks FIFA after the federation suspended the one-match ban given to U.S. forward Folarin Balogun for a red card in the team’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Balogun had been sent off following a VAR review for an incident involving defender Tarik Muharemovic during the World Cup Round of 32 match. Under FIFA rules, a straight red card normally triggers an automatic one-game suspension that prevents the player from participating in the next match. That would have ruled Balogun out of the U.S. last-16 game against Belgium in Seattle on Monday.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee later announced that, “in line with article 27” of the FIFA disciplinary code, the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year. If Balogun receives an infringement of similar nature and gravity during that period, the suspension can be reinstated. Multiple outlets report Trump posted on Truth Social calling the decision “what was right” and “reversing a great injustice,” while U.S. Soccer said it accepts the committee’s ruling and confirmed Balogun is eligible for Belgium.
