Sport was dominated by breakthrough and disruption alike. At Roland Garros, teenage Russian Mirra Andreeva delivered on years of promise, beating qualifier Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 to claim her first Grand Slam title and become the first Russian woman since Maria Sharapova in 2014 to win a major. In Monaco, another prodigy seized the spotlight as Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli produced a stunning final lap to snatch pole from Max Verstappen by just 0.043 seconds, marking the first Mercedes pole there since 2019 and the first by an Italian since 2004. Ferrari’s weekend, though, was clouded by the hospitalization of team principal Frederic Vasseur, who will miss qualifying while under observation. Off the track and court, West Ham was jolted by the resignation of joint-chair David Sullivan after what the club called impending publication of serious historic allegations, which he denies.
