A string of high-profile court and police developments dominated world news, with justice systems in Europe under particular scrutiny. In Oslo, Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, was sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted of two counts of rape and other offences, a case that drew global attention because of his royal ties. In Britain, the Court of Appeal upheld the government’s ban on Palestine Action under terrorism law, calling it a proportionate restriction on expression and handing the activist group a major legal defeat. Another UK court convicted teacher Jamie Varley of the sexual abuse and murder of his adopted baby son, Preston Davey, in a case of exceptional cruelty. Elsewhere, police made an arrest in London’s long-unsolved “Putney pusher” case, while in Sydney, teacher Leah Stewart was named as the victim of a devastating shark attack that left her critically injured.
