Sport today brought drama, delight and controversy in equal measure. At the World Cup, Brazil’s exit to Norway marked the end of an era as Neymar, who scored a late penalty in a 2-1 defeat, announced his international retirement, closing a Brazil career that yielded a record 80 goals. England, meanwhile, advanced after a 3-2 win over Mexico, but celebrations quickly turned anxious when Jordan Henderson suffered a freak fall near the advertising boards and was taken to hospital with a wrist injury that could threaten the rest of his tournament. Away from football, Wimbledon produced its own stirring story as British wildcard Arthur Fery stunned Grigor Dimitrov in a five-set thriller to reach the quarter-finals. And the sport’s governing politics flared too, with UEFA accusing FIFA of undermining the game’s integrity by lifting Folarin Balogun’s red-card ban ahead of the United States’ clash with Belgium.
