Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI has unveiled “Kimi K3,” a large language model it says is among the world’s largest open-weight systems. Multiple outlets report that the model is trained on 2.8 trillion parameters and is presented as an open-weights release, drawing comparisons to U.S. AI models such as Anthropic’s “Fable.” Moonshot describes Kimi K3 as supporting a very large context window—reported as around 1 million tokens—allowing it to handle and retain more information per prompt than earlier generations. Other reports also describe Kimi K3 as having open weights at roughly the 3-trillion scale.
Several sources frame the timing in the context of U.S.-China competition in advanced AI. One outlet says a U.S. official accuses Moonshot of distilling Anthropic’s Fable, following the release of Kimi K3. Moonshot simultaneously signals interest in pursuing capital markets: one report says the company is seeking a valuation around $50 billion and could go public, and another specifically reports that it is pursuing a Hong Kong IPO.
