Spanish authorities report that a wildfire burning roughly 100 kilometres north of Madrid has spread across the Guadalajara province, reaching more than 12,000 hectares. Multiple outlets say the blaze forces evacuations of several hundred residents, with one report putting the figure at about 700 people. The fire is described as “difficult,” and officials say it is still being fought.
Sources also link the incident to ongoing wildfire activity in Spain. France 24 notes that earlier this month Spain faced one of its deadliest wildfires in the south, and that firefighters are still working to contain another blaze that started in the northeast on Wednesday.
Regarding operations, one outlet reports that about 300 firefighters are involved, supported by 26 water-dropping aircraft, according to Spain’s regional forest fire response service.
