Apple tests a roughly 7-inch display for 20th anniversary iPhone

Macworld Back in 2024, Apple launched the iPhone 16 Pro Max with one of the largest smartphone screens ever made, jumping from 6.7 inches to 6.9 inches. Now, a new report claims that Apple is looking to take it even further for its 20th anniversary phone. According to prolific leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo (via Macrumors), Apple is testing a 7-inch screen for next year’s overhaul, which is expected to feature a “quad-curved screen” along with other design upgrades. Granted, a tenth of an inch (3mm) isn’t that big of a deal, and with the rumored decrease in bezel size, it probably won’t even be all that noticeable, but Apple will surely market it as the largest iPhone ever. Considering it’s more than a year away, we’ve heard a surprisingly large number of rumors about the 20th anniversary iPhone. According to reports, Apple is planning to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the iPhone much in the way it marked the 10th anniversary, with a massive redesign that sets the stage for the next 10 years. The handset is expected to feature a near-bezel-less screen with a curved design all around, with a small hole for the camera. It’s also supposed to feature haptic buttons and an upgraded camera system. Back in 2017, Apple unveiled the iPhone X with a dramatic redesign that dumped the Home button, added more than an inch to the screen size, and introduced the camera notch. The original iPhone X was just a single model with a 5.8-inch display, with the larger models arriving later.

Apple is reportedly prototyping a larger iPhone display measuring roughly 6.96 inches, which would likely be marketed as a 7-inch panel if it reaches production. According to Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, Apple is testing the display internally in preparation for the 20th anniversary iPhone, which is expected to launch next year. The leaker said that the screen ratio is the same as the current iPhone 17 Pro Max, but whether the display is ultimately used in the iPhone 20 Pro Max remains unconfirmed at this stage. Last month, Bloomberg reported that Apple had started ramping up work on two sizes of the 20th anniversary iPhone. Multiple rumors have suggested the device will have an edge-to-edge display with curved glass at all sides for a nearly borderless visual effect.
